The person who agreed to translate the wiki instructions from English to German for adding fountains in OpenStreetMap and fountains of photos to wikimedia commons is not responding. Can someone or some people please help out with this?
We will be making a 8 minute presentation of our 100% open data and collaborative project to 860 students from 48 countries at the United Nations on Wednesday, 8th of January. Here is a link to our project https://europeanwaterproject.org
We currently have instructions in English, French, Italian and Dutch.

Nach ca. 1/3: Es ist schon ein Krampf :) Vor allem, wenn man nicht einfach Google-Translate machen will, sondern auch noch verstehen will UND halbwegs gutes Deutsch hinzukriegen. Verzeiht bitte einzelne Tipp-Leerschlag und andere Fehler. Den Text hab ich so angepasst, dass er mit der deutschen Menüs von OSM und Wikimedia passt.

We will replace the images for Wikimedia Commons with those in the native languages very soon - I received an email suggestion today.
How does one change the language menus in OSM to German ? are the menus also available, in French, Dutch, Italian, and Spanish ? Instruction usability is a priority. If so, we need to replace the images in 5 languages with the native ones.

Schönes Projekt. Erinnert mich sehr an water-fountains.org/ :-) Aber manchmal ist es auch gut, wenn es verschiedene Approaches gibt. Speziell das einfache Hochladen von Bildern (auch ab Mobile App) scheint ein Feature zu sein, das einige Projekte gebrauchen können. Den Weblink in der Homepage/Karte würde ich ebenfalls auf "Open"-Webservices zeigen lassen (und nicht auf GOOG).
Es scheint ja noch nicht alles übersetzt zu sein. Falls Hubert ab morgen Dienstag noch Verstärkung braucht für die deutsche Übersetzung, könnten meine Praktikanten da noch nachhelfen.

We are in close contact with Ralf Hauser and Mathew Moy de Vitry from Zurich. Their project on ornamental and non-ornamental fountains is much broader in its technical ambitions. The European Water Project is very purposed focused. The app as a tool to bring about behavioral change - we are not trying to be innovative. Our main focus will be to try to create community.
The European Water Project conflation process of OSM data using Overpass API and Wikidata data using SPARQL into a merged collection of geojson objects closely follows that of the open-fountain.org and castle project leanings.
I got this from the online translation ... what was the issue ?
"I would also open the web link in the homepage / map Show "Open" web services (and not on GOOG)."

I would like to rephrase one sentence.
Our app is a tool to bring about behavioral change - we are not trying to be innovative for it's own sake. Rather, we are trying to be innovative with the goal of creating a good user experience and build engagement. A big challenge for 2020. The 2020 litmus test for our NGO.

I had two inputs: First, I'm proposing that you replace the link behind "Itinerary" in the info box from Google to OSM directions [1]... Second, I've seen that the translation to German [2] still is incomplete and I'm offering to you and Hubert, to help out tomorrow (with my interns) just in case you need this help.

P.S. In [3] I've written three open source "bots" which generate lists of of (1) missing photos in commons, (2) missing Wikidata entries in OSM, and (3) missing OSM objects compared to Wikidata.

1. I was not aware there was an OSM direction capability. I will test and implement it once I get it to work.
2. Thank you very much for your help with the translations. I appreciate it !
3. I will look at the links on the bots and revert after properly studying them. I am sure I will have questions.... once the lists are generated are the OSM updates done automatically or manually? How can we check that we won't be importing phantom fountains or poorly placed fountains?

Hello,
The person who agreed to translate the wiki instructions from
English to German for adding fountains in OpenStreetMap and fountains of photos to wikimedia commons is not responding. Can someone or some people please help out with this?
We will be making a 8 minute presentation of our 100% open data and
collaborative project to 860 students from 48 countries at the United Nations on Wednesday, 8th of January. Here is a link to our project https://europeanwaterproject.org
We currently have instructions in English, French, Italian and
Dutch.

Hi Stefan,
1) I have taken a brief look at the OSM directions and as much as I want to switch, I don't find it sufficiently attractive. For now, I will not make the change, but will retain the OSM alternative as well as a more palatable long-term solution of using the mapbox direction api for directions on the list of to do items.
3) Would it be possible to create a bot or a small script to find all OSM "fountain" nodes tagged either as 1) "amenity = drinking_water" or 2) "amenity = fountain & drinking_water = yes" which have a Wikidata Item with similar characteristics and a photo.
What would be the acceptable practice for linking these photos back to OSM ? How could we check to make sure that the photo we are adding is actually the correct one, without going in person?Wikidata is great, but I have an opinion regarding the quality of data.

Our app is a tool to bring about behavioral change - we are not trying
to be innovative for it's own sake. Rather, we are trying to be innovative with the goal of creating a good user experience and build engagement. A big challenge for 2020. The 2020 litmus test for our NGO.

If I understand you correctly, you can use Overpass turbo for this and search for "amenity=fountain and wikidata=*" as a starter. For example in Bern https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/ydrgbjo has been taking care of adding images/wikidata to *lots* of fountains: https://osm.li/NDE

Stuart which routing service did you test?
This being OSM there are at least 4 different services you could use (based on different routing engines with slightly different characteristics).

PS: as a tendency I would have suggested routing.openstreetmap.de which uses OSRM as the engine, but for example https://maps.openrouteservice.org/directions?n1=49.409445&n2=8.692953&am... has some specialist routing options that others don't have.

We will try to have native language screen shots for all six languages before the beginning of March which is the World water month.
Even with our best efforts at making the instructions clear, the difficulty in adding new fountains in OSM and photos in Wikimedia Commons for many non-technical people will be an insurmountable barrier....

Bei der Übersetzung bin ich widerholt über das Wort "fountain" gestolpert. Gemäss meinen Übersetzkunst ist damit ein Springbrunnen gemeint. Auch die Darstellung in OSM sieht mehr wie ein Springbrunnen aus und nicht wie ein "Wasserbezugsort". Ein Brunnen, so wie sie bei uns massenweise rumstehen, handelt es sich doch eher um ein "well" oder "tab". Oder einfach um amenity = drinking_water . Gibt es diesbezüglich so was wie "Grundsatzentscheide" innerhalbe der OSM Gemeinschaft?

Das Wiki über Fountain macht es eigentlich klar. Normale Brunnen sind keine Fountains. Bin mit Übersetzung fast fertig. Du kannst in ca 1/2 Stunde mit der Rechtschreibekorrektur anfangen :)

I had an exchange with some of the members at OSM France and their response was a bit more nuanced and more in-line with what I expected on this subject (emails copied below).
Maybe we have a different relationship in France with our fountains which are part of our heritage and consider them monuments to our past - even if most of the drinking water fountains in France are mis-labeled by our public authorities as "non-potable" for legal reasons. Or maybe the meaning of the word fountain in English and French is just broader than the wiki definition.

Ich glaube die "extravaganten" Beispiele auf dem wiki sind irreführend. Dekorativ ist halt immer relativ. Wenn du den Chateau de Rolle Brunnen anschaust, den Stuart verlinkt hat, hat der durchaus auch dekorativen Charakter. Auch wenn er neben einer Fontana di Trevi gewöhnlich aussieht. Aber vergleiche das mit dem anderen Ende des Spektrums: die "Badewannen" die oft in der Landwirtschaftlich als Tränke genutzt werden.
Wenn Fountain schlecht ins Deutsche übersetzt wurde, weshalb weisen dann alle Wikis mit Fountains (auch englsiche) auf Springbrunnen und dekorative Brunnen hin?
Das lesen der Wikis und Wörterbücher hat mich nicht weiter gebracht. Es scheint keinen englischen Begriff zu geben, der besser auf einen "Trog mit horizontaler Wasserleitung oberhalb, Wasser fällt stetig und gleichmässig in den Trog" passt. Aber mein Englisch ist auch nicht so gut.
Spannend wird es zudem wenn man die Trinkwassersituation in den UK anschaut. Ein "Fountain" in Edinburg heisst "west bow well" und nicht "west bow fountain". https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/PxJ
Ja spannend, aber historisch. Wenn ich mir Fotos davon anschaue, hat das vor allem Denkmal Charakter. Es fliesst kein Wasser mehr. Der Name stammt aus dem 17. Jahrhundert. Auch wenn es dekorativ ist, war der Zweck angeblich, um einen Markt mit Wasser zu versorgen. Das könnte den Namen geprägt haben. Und das historische Witches' Well in der Nähe wird in einer Beschreibung dann wieder als fountain bezeichnet wird.
Die spezielle Eigenschaft von Trinkbrunnen ist meist, dass sie ideal zum trinken sind: Wenig Wasser, welches einige Zentimeter nach oben spritzt, auf Brusthöhe. Oder andere Variationen welche sich zum direkten trinken eignen. Manchmal mit Knopf oder Hahn bedienbar (also fliesst nicht ständig)

Ich finde amenity=watering_place für Laufbrunnen nicht sehr geeignet. Einerseits bedeutet amenity=watering_place lediglich eine Wasserstelle für Tiere, egal ob künstlich oder natürlich, d. h., es muss kein Trog vorhanden sein. Andererseits waren diese Brunnen nicht nur für Tiere bestimmt, sondern primär für Menschen – sowohl zum Trinken als auch zum Kochen, Waschen, Putzen und sogar zur Brandbekämpfung. Zudem steht heutzutage meines Erachtens der historisch/dekorative Wert dieser Brunnen im Vordergrund.

This is a very interesting subject and I am glad we are discussing it.
I think that the European Water Project terminology differs from that of OSM. The phase 2 of our project is to add cafés and bars willing to fill up anyone's water bottle for free. This is very popular in the UK and a proprietary data based NGO called Refill is doing just this. While we wish Refill all their success, we believe that maintaining a large network of places (fountains and cafes/bars) where anyone can refill their reusable bottle without creating single-use plastic waste is best done collaboratively.
This makes it very important that these instructions lead people adding a faucet type drinking point to tag the node as 1) amenity=drinking_water and not 2) amenity=fountain and drinking_water = yes.
We tried to deal with this nuance for tagging by separating "modern fountains" and "stone fountains" . If you have a better suggestion, please let us know.

Gemäss meinen Übersetzkunst ist damit ein Springbrunnen gemeint. Auch die Darstellung in OSM sieht mehr wie ein Springbrunnen aus und nicht wie ein "Wasserbezugsort".
Ein Brunnen, so wie sie bei uns massenweise rumstehen, handelt es sich doch eher um ein "well" oder "tab". Oder einfach um amenity = drinking_water .

Yes, it is crystal clear to me that the OSM definition must take precedence over any contradicting definition with respect to node tagging in OSM. We will add the language as suggested.
In addition, if you have a suggestion of how we can clarify the language in the instructions to explain to the few super-users who will actually take the time to add fountains that they should only tag a drinking point as a fountain in XXX and YYY circumstances it would be even better.

We're finished proof reading the Wiki translation to German! Looking at [1] you see an almost perfect timing (!) that after Stanswiki my interns Chilfing (Christopher) and Jwilderm (Johannes) continued editing.
Regarding the tagging I probably was unclear: I did non want to suggest, that you prefer "amenity=drinking_water" over "amenity=fountain". I just wanted to suggest to read the Wiki in case of doubt.
And having said, that the definition in OSM preceeds project needs, I'd like to add that you can of course add certain properties of fountains as new tags, given you want to describe an object in more detail - and given there's no existing tag in use which covers that property.
