To be honest, debating with you Is a bit frustrating because you seem to obviously ignore the strong points made by Sarah & Marc, and furthermore you don’t answer the precise questions that were directed to you.
As I see it, Sarah and Marc have demonstrated that your over-use of nodes is simply wrong from a conceptual point of view. Thus, we are not anymore in the realm of “tastes and colors”, as you seem to understand it. Frankly, I hope you will acknowledge that because, if not, this thread will not come to a constructive conclusion.
My “Swiss Compromise”-Proposal to get there would be:
1) The community acknowledges your effort in detailing landuse=forest mapping on a quite impressive area.
2) On your side, you acknowledge that you created landuse cover objects with an excessive number of nodes and you adapt your future mapping activity in accordance.
3) The community does not start a massive effort to simplify the objects you created, because there are lots of other things where mapping energy can be directed at, bringing much more added value to the map.
4) On the appropriate pages in the Wiki, we insert the points made by Sarah and Marc and lay down that it is not appropriate to map forest limits with more than one node every 10 m (or so). This in order to prevent that mappers in a “gamification-mood” come to the idea to artificially create an excessive number of nodes with the main purpose of improving their ranking in the contributor’s statistics (@Pan: Maybe you did notice that you are currently ranked #1 in Switzerland’s OSMstats?).
What do you think about these proposals?

I am sorry but I don't agree with their arguments and I have addressed them before. Let me restate.
Sarah makes the argument that the forest changes. Of course it does. I think that precise mapping in this case is a feature not a bug as it will in the future allow us to study the evolution of the vegetation.
Mark makes the argument that some of the precise forests are "wrong" and again, in some cases, he is right. I am afraid it applies to the complete set of OSM data. At some point, it should be deleted and corrected with better sources.
Both these statements are valid but not as a counter argument to the precise mapping in general.
I do however agree that at times, the mapping, below let's say one meter, doesn't make sense as the source doesn't have this accuracy. It is probably the only objective point in the discussion and I will pay attention to the zoom levels in JOSM.

Mapping in great detail is in theory not that wrong, even though we may end up with something a bit weird, where one area is superdetailed and another not .. but that's the nature of osm anyway. Although I feel one can overdo it (like mapping every trottoir along a road). The only thing wrong is mapping something, that is not present on the background used (it may not be present in reality even, but that's an issue of couch mapping that I have, too), like artificial, algorithmic waves etc..

No, that is not at all the point I was trying to make. I was saying that the definition where a forest ends is fuzzy at any one given point in time. Here is how you can test this: give the current Swisstopo imagery to 10 different mappers and tell them to map the forest on them with the highest precision possible. I guarantee you that you will get 10 different results. The deviation between the results will tell you how much fuzziness there is in a boundary and consequentely what preceision is worth mapping. OSM is at its best when the average of the 10 opinions is what is actually mapped.
Keep up your good work in refining the forests but maybe consider the following points to avoid future conflicts with other mappers:
* Use a few less points. There is no hard limit here and sometimes a sharp bend will do well with more points, but an average 10m distance is probably a good rule-of-thumb for the image quality we have today. * Try to straighten things out a bit. If the treeline looks straight on average, then map it straight instead of going around every tree branch. That does not mean that you should return to pointy angles, I just mean mapping the treeline a little less wiggly in the spirit of the average I was explaining above. * Consider using natural=tree nodes for single trees and small groups of trees and also when there is a tree slightly outside the treeline where currently you would add a little appendix. This discussion has in a large way gone both out of topic thematically and somewhat sour in the atmospherics. Let me take the time to reply to the various contributors in a lengthy but hopefully clear way.
I will firstly expose what constitutes a constructive edit as well as some foreword about what I understand as a healthy discussion. Secondly, the main arguments against forest micromapping as well as the result of my reflection on these arguments will be outlined. One of these arguments will most likely change the way I map forests and should probably be used as a good practice for the wiki. Thirdly, I will refocus on the main topic and expose the problem of the destructive edits. Finally, I will propose a metaphor of my own way to see the whole thing.
*Constructive edits and constructive discussions on OSM* A constructive OSM edit is an edit that brings the data closer to the physical world on the base of sources compliant with the licence. Bringing more accuracy with "illegal" sources isn't a constructive edit just as mapping false features. In addition "spam" exists when either untrue or unnecessary data is added, such as an additional node in a straight way for instance. I will elaborate more on this particular point later as I feel that there is ground for improvement on my side on this particular topic.
Regarding the atmospherics, this discussion has triggered expressions such as "give up" or "frustrating", which I deplore. I assume that all the participants of the mailing list and most OSM contributors act and speak in good faith. That being said, prescriptive orders or semi "threats" from individuals taking upon themselves to speak in the name of the community sound very much like a mexican standoff. I am afraid to say that those who confuse a genuine OSM contributor with a Western criminal are in the wrong film. I like Sergio Leone movies but we are amongst volunteer contributors using their free time for the sake of an open source project. I have never destroyed good data, duplicated data nor used non compliant sources. The tone of the discussion seems therefore at times inappropriate considering the context. To which I confess I tend to escalate further, which isn't smart.
Let's review some of the arguments against forest micromapping. I will regroup them but I hope to cover all of them.
*The "data overload" argument* This is an argument to protect the server's load but I believe that no one should map for the server. However, there is a gray zone, on which I will elaborate on the "node density exceeding the imagery" paragraph.
*The psychological / motivational arguments* No one knows why other people do stuff. Why do some users map dog waste baskets and others brothels, police stations or individual trees? No one knows. I suspect that a large part of the reason is unknown to the users themselves. However, making hypotheses on someone's motivation on a public mailing list isn't only irrelevant, it inevitably leads the discussion towards straw men and toxic atmospherics. The topic is certainly interesting for an academic paper in psychology but irrelevant to this discussion and most of the time toxic.
*The "wrong mapping according to the newer imagery" argument* It'is the life of most OSM data : it gets improved with new sources. Most buildings can be redrawn with newer imagery. 3D people might redraw them using photogrammetry. The continental shift is, in a very small way, putting a time limit on all the data. All these things are true and at no time am I trying to suggest that all the detailed forest should be considered as sacred or definitive. I hope that it is clear: as with the rest of OSM, forests should be corrected and improved with newer sources. It isn't specific to the forest, though.
*The "node density exceeding the imagery resolution" argument* It probably comes from Sarah and it did trigger some thinking on my side. *I suspect that, as I did some of these edits mechanically while thinking about something else, I didn't always consider the level of zoom in JOSM. It is likely that we find ourselves close to the "involuntary spam" gray zone as the same level of accuracy regarding the imagery might be achievable with less nodes in some cases. I will certainly pay attention to that in the future.*
*The "changing nature of the forest" argument* Very true, the vegetation changes. The same applies to all data. Buildings are constructed and demolished. Businesses open and close but are mapped anyway. While I don't like to speak about motivation, I suspect that it might be interesting to study the evolution of vegetation over time with vector data in the future.
*The "unclear limit of the forest" argument* It is a fact that there is no clear way to decide what constitutes the exact limit of a forest. But again, the same applies to all the buildings (I suspect that many are mapped according to the roof and not the walls) and almost all OSM data. Rivers https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/945049 are often mapped with both an (imprecise ) area as well as an (imprecise) way. Towns get mapped with both a node for the center of the town as well as an area for the residential area of the administrative boundary. The same logic could be applied to trees (area for the leaf cover and node for the trunc, which would be more precise that the center of a village or a large river), although I have no intention of doing so. This topic, as almost all features, is the consequence of the mapper assessment, the mapper time dedication, hopefully some general good practices as well as the sources used.
I hope that it summarized in an honest and comprehensive way the arguments of the discussion. It does as I have understood them at least.
*The destructive edit problem* Now to go back to the initial topic. It certainly wouldn't be a problem to simplify what I have called "involuntary spam" provided something like that is actually there. Removing nodes exceeding the image resolution is desirable and I am not talking about that when I discuss this particular case of (probably well intentioned) vandalism. Using automated tools to "simplify" creates forest where there are no forests, sharp angles where the forest is smooth. This is what I call a destructive edit (it regresses the data away from the physical world) and constitutes the initial concern triggering the discussion. It is one thing to map according to one's own vision of what OSM should and shouldn't be. It is a complete other thing to actively degrade the existing data according to this subjective vision. I still don't know how to address that problem as the discussion stayed most of the time out of topic.
*The metaphor* The reason why this discussion has also been frustrating from my point of view is the following. It's like a person voluntarily cleaning a street and removing litter to improve the neighborhood. This person might be a weirdo as she uses a toothbrush instead of a broom to clean particular places in the street. Now comes another person dumping garbage on the street. The original volunteer addresses the problem to the municipal council and the discussion focuses only on how bad it is to use a toothbrush instead of a broom. Some members of the council also argue that it is customary to clean the street from east to west and not the other way around while another municipal councillor issues threats against the volunteer cleaner.
As all metaphors, It is debatable but it does at the very least outlines my own subjective perception of the discussion.
Let me reiterate my hopes that everybody feels understood as well as the hopes that some will sincerely consider my arguments as I considered theirs.

You always write about "precise mapping". But your mapping is not. To be very clear, with the same source as you, I would have done a *better* mapping job while using 20 times less nodes. And several other mappers would have done the same. But it is not a problem, you are doing a great job of mapping huge areas of forest. The fact that maybe you "edit mechanically while thinking about something else" is probably an advantage that allows you to map such big areas. The only problem is that you accuse of vandalism people who are "simplifying" some of your edits. For me, it is far from obvious that this simplification is bad, and I write that, because I found cases when deleting 95% of your nodes actually improves the map.

An intelligent simplification would be an improvement. But simplification performed with a crappy automated tool that generates weird zig-zag lines and sharp angles? Not a fan.
As a relative outsider, I don't have much of a stake in this discussion. But I think the mood in this conversation could be less defensive if the participants first acknowledged that, even though simplification might be called for, this is not the right way to do it.
Lieber RB (alias Pan) Mir scheint, dass du immer noch Waldgrenzen in viel zu fein kartierst, mit Stützpunkten z.T. alle 2m. Luftbilder sind kaum aktuell. Cher RB (alias Pan) Il me semble que tu continues à cartographier les limites de la forêt de manière beaucoup trop fine, avec des points d'appui parfois tous les 2 mètres. Les photos aériennes ne sont guère actuelles. Celles de Swisstopo, en particulier, que tu utilises, ont jusqu'à six ans. Et la lisière de la forêt évolue fortement. ich hatte trotzdem den Mapping Art und Weise angepasst.
Finde ich persönlich nicht: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1209951563 (von gestern) wäre aus meiner Sicht und laut swisstopo SWISSIMAGE) eher als 6 Einzelbäume und nicht als `landuse` mit 53 Knoten abgebildet.
Was mich - ebenso persönlich - Wunder nimmt: zeichnest du die detaillierten `landuse`s händisch in iD, oder hast du ein Tool, welches dir die Umrisse extrahiert und diese dann in iD überführt?

PS: Ich habe https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/3900622 gelöst und danach in JOSM mit https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Action/SimplifyWay ein paar wenige Waldgrenzen in der Gegend dort vereinfacht. Mit einem ‘maximum Error’ von 25 cm (!) habe ich über 3000 Nodes von deinen (schon vor 2 Jahren eingezeichneten) `landuse=forest` gelöscht

Um meinen Senf auch noch dazuzugeben 😉: Wenn es zwei oder mehrere praktisch gleichwertige Möglichkeiten gibt, etwas zu tun, bevorzuge ich grundsätzlich die einfachste Möglichkeit.

In diesem Fall erscheinen mir die Einzelbäume nicht nur einfacher (da weniger Nodes notwendig), sondern auch genauer – man weiss, wie viele Bäume vorhanden sind und wie nahe sie beieinander stehen. Die Einzelbäume sind auf Swissimage gut ersichtlich. (Übrigens sind dem Revert https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/141558793 einzelne Bäume zum Opfer gefallen.)

Hier stehen die Bäume etwas dichter, weshalb ich die Position der einzelnen Bäume nicht überall erkennen kann. Meines Erachtens wäre es am besten, solche Flächen als offener Wald (`natural=open_forest` o. ä.) einzuzeichnen, wie dies auch Swisstopo macht. Leider gibt es (bisher) kein solches Tag.
Apropos Swisstopo: Wenn ich das richtig sehe, zeigt ein grüner Punkt meist nicht die Position eines Baums an, sondern ist eine Art Schraffur für einen offenen Wald (wie die dunkelgrauen Punkte für Geröll stehen, jedoch nicht für einzelne Steine oder Felsbrocken). Oftmals gibt es in Wirklichkeit mehr Bäume als grüne Punkte.

PS: Ich habe https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/3900622 gelöst und danach in JOSM mit https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Action/SimplifyWay ein paar wenige Waldgrenzen in der Gegend dort vereinfacht. 3. Of course, anything in OSM should be improved and modified, once a better source exists. This applies to forests, buildings and any other elements. However, replacing detailed areas with untrue simpler geometries or with points when there are no ways to see where the individual tunks are located simply constitutes a regression.
In addition, in the discussion this year, false allegations have been made, suggesting that I was using automated tools and that I was mapping "arbitrarily". Both these claims are obviously wrong. Personnellement, je trouve que bloquer un utilisateur car il y a des divergences d'opinion au sein de la communauté est une mesure extrême. Au moins j'espère que le blocage est temporaire, le temps de trouver un compromis sur le niveau de détail souhaité pour de la cartographie. Je reconnais que les tracés de Pan sont difficiles à mettre à jour par la suite. Mais le niveau élevé de précision de ses tracés m'a parfois permis de me situer dans des régions où je ne captais plus de signal GPS.
Nous sommes une communauté qui a à cœur de faire progresser les cartes OpenStreetMap, essayons ensemble de trouver les meilleures compromis. Dans ce genre de situation n'est-ce pas possible de provoquer une réunion (physique ou virtuelle), plutôt que d'échanger par mails ?

Of course. I said that they could and should be replaced with newer shapes once available. See my point 3 above and I also stated it in some changeset comments. They were true to the available imagery and sometimes mapped with too many nodes (but too many nodes isn't exactly an attack against the project). Buildings get destroyed and built, forests grow and are cut. Newer imagery might use better correction... OSM is a living project and everything should evidently be updated when better sources are available.
Now, if you imply that I am somehow "guilty" of not updating everything I have ever mapped as soon as a new source is available, I am afraid you are right. But who isn't?

Une forêt ouverte (pas sûr que ce soit le terme français correct) est une zone boisée où les arbres ne sont pas proches les uns des autres (les cimes ne se touchent pas), de sorte que beaucoup de lumière parvient jusqu'au sol – un peu comme un intermédiaire entre un arbre isolé et une forêt « habituelle » (forêt dense) ; voir par exemple la zone entourée en bleu sur l'image sur https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/new-tag-for-light-forests/8004/27 en contraste avec la zone entourée en rouge – merci à Tan pour le lien vers la discussion !

Probablement oui, mais je ne suis pas un expert en matière de forêt et de langue anglaise. 🙂 Dans le document « International classification and mapping of vegetation » [^1], l'UNESCO qualifie une forêt claire comme « woodlands » tandis qu'elle qualifie une forêt dense comme « closed forest ».
(Les definitions de l'UNESCO sont comme suit :
* forêt claire: formée d'arbres d'au moins de 5 mètres de haut, la plupart des cimes ne se touchant pas les unes les autres, mais couvrant au moins 40% de la surface * forêt dense : formée d'arbres d'une taille supérieure à 5 mètres avec des cimes jointives)

Bonne idée. Cependant, je trouverais quand même utile une (sous-)balise supplémentaire plus simple pour `open_forest/closed_forest`.

It was a so-called “0 hour block” [1], meaning that Pan *had* to read the message before continuing to edit without any restrictions. It has been suggested before that the naming of this “important message” could be changed [2].

Je ne sais pas si tu avais produit les mêmes erreurs avec les bâtiments, lampadaires et routes. Je n'avais remarqué le problème que pour les forêts. Heureusement, j'ai cru comprendre que tu avais changé de méthode. Malheureusement il reste encore des milliers (millions ?) de noeuds à corriger. Par exemple pour cette simple vigne bordée d'une forêt: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/images/4/47/Mapping-with-too-many-nodes.web... il y a 27 nœuds erronés à corrigé, alors qu'un mapping précis ET correct n'utilise que 2 ou 3 nœuds (j'ai surligné le tout en rouge).

Besides, at times, using a larger zoom and too many clicks, I haven't committed mistakes on this topic.
My point is that your argument is a fallacy as all OSM data mapped by any user represents the situation at a precise moment. Everything. We might argue about the continents, but rivers are being moved, buildings demolished, etc. The only way to make this argument valid would be to have a subjective level of "acceptable" details. Micromappers have since a long time mapped individual parking spots https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/982209337 and individual steps https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/935133105. These steps, which require a level of 30cm just like detailed forest and parking spots will likely be subjects to change in the future but are perfectly valid objects to map. Using too many nodes is a nuisance to the future editors and should in my opinion be avoided, just like gluing landuses to the streets for instance. I am not proud of documenting some useless nodes but it isn't a big issue.
Regarding the fact that some data is "wrong", you are right. This is the expected fate of all OSM data with time: features changes and newer sources allow corrections. I recently corrected a few thousands of buildings, some of them 10m away from their location in the database. The users who mapped them didn't commit any mistake: they did their best at the time with the available data.
Openstreetmap is a community whose users are only motivated by individual motives. At no point was there ever a limit of the micromapping details. I understand that it doesn't align with your own vision, but there is nothing wrong with it as long as it uses allowed sources and is true to these sources. Some people map steps, other forests and addresses while others still dedicate their time in quality control or superficial mapping of undermapped areas. All of this is fine. There is largely enough work to be done without wasting time and emotions.
Like any human being, I make mistakes, including in OSM, and I try to improve and not repeat them. The recent forest mapping however, isn't part of that category.

sont faux. Les erreurs ne sont généralement que de quelques mètres, ce qui n'est a priori pas grave. Le problème, ce sont les milliers (et plus probablement millions) de points qui ne correspondent à rien sur le terrain, qui ne sont que la projection naïve d'une photographie prise sous un angle A à un temps T. Or OpenStreetMap vise à cartographier le terrain, pas à faire une sorte de vectorisation de photos aériennes.

Une erreur similaire est malheureusement très souvent commise par presque toutes les personnes qui mappent des buildings. Elles mappent tout le toit, y compris l'avant-toit, comme le building. Bien sûr, il est difficile de savoir où sont les murs, mais des indices permettent souvent de les repérer. La France dispose d'un export du cadastre, et permet de bien voir la différence de taille entre la surface du toit et la surface occupée au sol.

Commentaire pertinent, mais à nuancer. Tout dépend du cas, certaines routes sont délimitées par le cadastre comme vous le dites, mais pas celles de moindre importance qui sont "dans" la forêt. Ici un extrait du cadastre de Bienne City (abrégé BNC, oui oui malgré votre soutien au déclassement de "city" vers "town", les milieux du rap disent bien comme ça lol). La "route d'Evilard" est bornée, pas les voies secondaires, goudronnées ou non.

Pour ce qui est des maisons, le plus souvent, l'image satellite est oblique, on voit le pied du mur d'un côté, mais pas de l'autre, et si le terrain est en pente, il faut vraiment deviner. Après, Openstreetmap, c'est une affaire d'amateurs et déjà plus complet que Googlemap. On reste libre de pousser jusqu'à rapporter les cartes cadastrales, mais est-ce que ça fait sens?

Comme je le disais plus haut:l'essentiel est bien de faire de son mieux à chaque fois, et de ne modifier que lorsque l'on pense avoir une meilleure source ou prendre le temps de mapper plus précisément, typiquement affiner les bâtiments comme le suggère Marc mongenet plus haut.
Le débat canopée / forêt n'est pas pertinent. Il existe un niveau d'interprétation de ce qu'est ou n'est pas une forêt et le seul moyen de les renseigner est bien de délimiter la zone couverte par la canopée. peut être que des softwares pourraient interpréter ces éléments de différentes manières selon la densité et l'échelle, mais il s'agit bien de l'erreur classique consistant à cartographier pour le rendu . Il n'y a pas de raison de mapper de forêt lorsqu'il y a des espaces de plusieurs mètres entre les groupes d'arbres si l'on peut. Le faire s'il n'y a rien, c'est mieux que rien. Le faire alors que les groupes d'arbres étaient documentés de bonnes foi et avec les meilleures sources disponibles, c'est de la régression.

c'est ton avis, j'espère que tu réalises que personne d'autre que toi ne prétend qu'une forêt comprend un bout du champ de l'autre côté de la route parce que une branche passe au dessus de la route
j'ai rien contre que tu renseignes la canopé même si perso je n'en vois pas la foret, mais ni natural=wood ni landuse=forest ne renseigne la canopé, invite donc un autre tag genre natural=canopy si ce genre d'information te semble utile
pour moi utiliser natural=wood pour la canopé est justement le tag pour le rendu que tu dénonces.

Dans une carte topographique, il n'est probablement pas utile de s'intéresser de savoir si une route est incluse dans un bien-fond ou pas. Mais l'exemple montre bien la problématique qui est posée. Il faut s'accorder sur la hiérarchie des objets. D'un côté, on a des objets "de surface", qui se chevauchent, comme une commune, une forêt, une zone industrielle, un quartier, un lac etc et des objets qui s'y superposent, comme des bâtiments, des cours d'eau, des routes. En ce sens, quand une route traverse une forêt, la surface désignée comme forêt s'arrête-t-elle de chaque côté de la route ou bien la route est intégrée à la surface d'un niveau plus bas qui est désigné comme forêt?

Ce style d'hommes de paille ne contribue pas à une discussion apaisée. Cela n'est pas et n'a jamais été ma position et plusieurs personnes ont dans cette discussion partagé l'opinion que mapper précisément les zones boisées n'était pas un problème. Je partage au contraire l'opinion probablement très commune qu'à la fin de l'affaire, nous n'essayons de produire qu'une approximation de la réalité. Nous essayons par contre de le faire le plus fidèlement possible grâce à des sources licites.
Encore une fois, la seule source permettant de définir ce qu'est une zone boisée est "le vert" du feuillage ou "le brun" du branchage pour les photo aériennes hivernales. La question de savoir où on s'arrête est très subjective. Certains bâtiments sont documentés avec des points, d'autres avec des surfaces grossières, et d'autres enfin avec différentes parties décrivant les avant-toits, les tours , les couleurs et les formes des toits. Une personne définissant une forêt comme une forme géométrique très grossière fait un travail utile s'il n'y a rien d'autre, comme si elle introduisait un bâtiment défini par un point. Les utilisateurs suivants qui documenteront les clairières et les contours plus précis accompliront également un travail respectable et utile.
J'ai à plusieurs reprises reconnu avoir par le passé (il y a plusieurs années, en général) défini des zones boisées avec trop de points par rapport à la résolution des sources disponibles d'une part et par rapport au nombre de points nécessaire à décrire la forme souhaitée d'autre part. Je n'en suis pas fier et reprends périodiquement moi-même certains de ces segments pour les corriger avec de nouvelles sources et moins de points. Il s'agit d'une erreur mais d'une erreur bénigne dont la plus importante conséquence est de compliquer la tâche des futurs contributeurs, ce qui n'est évidemment pas mon but.
Concernant la "simplification", des régressions sont introduites par des utilisateurs sous ce prétexte. C'est ainsi que l'on arrive typiquement à ce résultat https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/486938535 par exemple: des espèces de formes géométriques grossières presque sans rapport avec la réalité là où il y avait autrefois une tentative de représentation fidèle de la réalité. D'autres utilisateurs sont capables de simplifier de manière utile et non destructive comme par exemple dans cette petite zone boisée https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/976540922. Le propos initial de cette discussion consiste à dénoncer les régressions apparentées au premier exemple, pas à refuser toute simplification ou correction, bien évidemment.
Pour moi, si une source le permet, il est bienvenu de délimiter l'espace occupé par une route dans une forêt. De nombreuses personnes le font, d'autres non. Et ce n'est pas un problème. Comme je l'ai dit plus haut, le projet Openstreetmap me donne régulièrement l'occasion d'observer avec une sorte de perplexité mêlée parfois d'admiration des sujets ou des styles de contributions étonnants. Le fait de poursuivre des buts différents et d'avoir des styles différents n'est pas un problème mais une richesse.
