bike and pedestrian routing for Switzerland

Hi, I've been playing around with the new OSRM routing software lately and as a result have set up an experimental routing website for Switzerland: http://osm.lonvia.de/swissroute/ It is pretty much a clone of the original map.project-osrm.org with the difference that it offers three different routing profiles: car, bike, foot. The data is updated daily (normally finished around noon) and restricted to Switzerland only. The idea of this site is to play around with these profiles to get a more useful router for non-motorized travel. It already takes into account some extra tags like tracktype, sac_scale and surface to find you a more pleasant route tha the usual 'walk along the big, noisy motorway' but I'm sure there are others I've forgotten. The tags currently in use are summerized here: https://github.com/lonvia/cbf-routing-profiles/wiki/Profiles Try it out and let me know if you have suggestions to improve the profiles. A final word of warning: the times given are very, very approximate due to the way the software works, especially for the foot and bike profiles. Stammtisch Zürich im November 2012

Hallo zusammen, der nächste Termin für den Zürcher OSM-Stammtisch wäre der 11.11.12, was mal wieder ein Sonntag ist. Wir könnten uns am Sonntag wieder einmal in Cham treffen. Allerdings würden uns für diesen Stammtisch gerne zwei Studenten der HSR besuchen und ihre Arbeit mit OSM vorstellen. Sie können aber nur unter der Woche kommen. Wir müssten den Stammtisch dann also entsprechend verschieben. Was ist euch am liebsten? Hi Sarah, I played around with your site and was surprised how well it already worked, certainly better than I would have expected. The car routing worked very well. I guess on tracks with grade1 you are looking for explicit access: vehicle, motor_vehicle, motorcar, which is a good thing because many tracks are in reality only accessible for forestry or agriculture, they are just not marked accordingly yet. The bike routing worked well within your specs too, I liked the fact that it can deal with start or end points on paths, which would be unsuitable (sac_scale) and avoided otherwise. However I found that if you chose your start or end point on such a path, the routing doesn't seem to take the shortest path to more acceptable highways, but seems to continue longer than necessary on unacceptable paths, if that makes for a shorter route. In general, I agree with you that the "Bike" and the "Foot" Profiles could use more differentiation. On a racing bike with thin tires, even a bumpy grade1 track can be rather irritating, on a city or a trecking bike, tracks up to grade2 two shouldn't be a problem, same for paths with asphalt and gravel if they are not explicitly prohibited. And for mountain bikes, well, track grade3 or surface=ground is where the fun just starts. So for racing bikes, you probably want to avoid surface!=asphalt, sac_scale=*, mtb:scale=* or trail_visibility=* in general. For city and trecking bikes surface gravel/paved/concrete/cobblestone should be fine, but everything with an sac_scale>hiking, an mtb:scale>0 or trail_visibility<excellent should be off limits. And most mountain bikers wouldn't have a problem with any grade of track, mtb:scale<=1 and trail_visibility>=good, many of them would accept or even search for more challenging conditions. On foot, I would distinguish between hiking and walking around in a city. For the latter, I'd prefer surface asphalt/gravel/paved/concrete/cobblestone and avoid grass or ground (and probably sac_scale=hiking too). I've set up yet another noname layer on http://qa.poole.ch/ mainly motivated by the suspicion that post-redaction we would have a lot of unnamed roads. This has turned out to be at least partially true. for example http://qa.poole.ch/?zoom=15&lat=47.52631&lon=7.89954&layers=TB0 and http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/SimonPoole/diary/17962 have obviously never seen a mapper on the ground. * Helvetia ist was für Historiker (name_alt:, name_lat: ?) ;-) * Die Namen in unseren Landessprachen plus EN finde ich am schlausten, weil es bei einer sprach-abhängigen Suchabfrage AUCH Treffer gibt (wie Synonyme)! * Zusätzlich natürlich ch-de, ch-fr, ch-it .. Gruss, Arthur
