Dear all,
I am using this channel to broadcast this information to all interested mappers. We have bought and put online a high-resolution imagery of the town of Khorog http://osm.org/go/zxm5A1KA--,in Tajikistan. Khorog (30000 inhabitants) is located at the Afghan border, 2000m a.s.l. and is highly exposed to natural disasters (earthquakes, avalanches, landslides...). The goal of our project is to build upon OSM to provide the first detailed spatial database ever. Those data will then be used (amongst others) for disaster risk reduction.
If you wish to participate, here is some additional information:
The first priority is to map:
- All roads / streets / alleys - All buildings - Main natural elements (riverbed, landcover...)
In order to guarantee some harmonization, the most relevant tags for the Tajik context are described and illustrated here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Tajikistan/Tags
Presets for JOSM have been developped as well and are available here: http://humadat.alwaysdata.net/tms/khorog/preset/preset_tj.xml [How to use the presets in JOSM: http://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Preferences/Map#TaggingPresets ]
The imagery is available as TMS here: http://humadat.alwaysdata.net/tms/khorog/%7Bzoom%7D/%7Bx%7D/%7B-y%7D.jpg [How to add a TMS image in JOSM: http://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Preferences/Imagery ]
To avoid overlapping edits, it is advisable that mappers use the tasking manager http://tasks.hotosm.org/job/44
Thanks in advance for your help and don't hesitate to contact me, should you have any question or comment.
Cheers,
Stéphane

Dear all
I just realised that there was a typo in the URL for the imagery in my first message...
The correct URL is:
http://humadat.alwaysdata.net/tms/khorog/tiles/%7Bzoom%7D/%7Bx%7D/%7B-y%7D.j...
(it was already correct in the Tasking Manager... only my email was wrong)
Sorry if some of you have tried to display it andhave received an error message
Best,
Stéphane

Hi Stéphane
Cool project :) I started working on the outskirts of the town and contributed 35 tasks so far.
Who's the organization behind this?

Hi!
and thanks for your active involvement! I'm happy to see that the map of Khorog has dramatically improved since Saturday :-)
Formally, there is no organisation behind this project... Just me and a couple of friends and ex-colleagues in Tajikistan.
I have been living and working there for more than 2 years and still try to remain active and do some (hopefully) useful stuff!
As Tajikistan is highly prone to natural disasters and suffers from a lack of available spatial data (that is necessary for disaster prevention and disaster relief), I have started this project as a show-case for NGOs and other institutions. Once the whole city is mapped, I will try to use it to demonstrate to those people how crowd-sourcing (and OSM) can be a very interesting option for some of their activities.
That's for the story!
Cheers,
Stéphane

Dear all
just wanted to thank you deeply for your involvement in the mapping of Khorog!
Since yesterday, 100% of the town has been mapped and roughly 53% has been validated
*A few statistics*:
Number of announced contributors (in the tasking manager)
9
Number of tasks (one task is a 200x200 meters area to map)
253
Elapsed time to reach full coverage (100% of Khorog mapped)
less than 5 days
Number of buildings mapped
2976
Average amount of buildings mapped in one hour
25
Also, in case you doubted that your involvement was useful, please refer to the feedback I have received today:
*From within Tajikistan*:
*"Thanks for the work, its really valuable I believe."*
*"Looks very good. Thanks for this !!"*
