Would the Welcome Tool https://welcome.osm.be (wiki page here https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Welcome_tool) be helpful in welcoming and orienting new members? Simon, I thought I remembered you saying it was quite a bit of work sending the emails out the current way.

It more or less does the same thing I do, a bit more automated, but I'm not sure it actually saves anything in everyday use.
Sending a welcome mail is 1 click on the mail from the RSS feed, one click on the user account link, one click on the "Send message" button, one click on the title field and a key press, one click and paste for the welcome text, one click to send. Once everything is set up that is really fast, aka a couple of seconds. We typically have a bit over 1'000 new contributors each year, so at worst we are talking about 2-3 hours / year just sending the messages.
What takes time and dominates everything else is giving accounts that, for whatever reason, are worthy of it, a closer look, and that is no faster with the welcome tool. Using it would make sense if we had a substantially higher influx of new accounts and/or were splitting the work up. But it means more moving parts which in turn cause extra work too.

Thanks all, this is good to think about. I think the French welcome page is nice. overall it sounds like no immediate action is needed.
I may experiment with making a welcome card/sticker with a QR code or URL to a 1 page welcome guide, something to just give people to get started if they are interested.
I think OSM UK had some really nice materials for this also in their microgrant project: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Microgrants/Microgrants_2020/Proposal/Le...
Their printed leaflets could be reused by us and included:
- An introduction to mapping your neighbourhood - The benefits of photo mapping and how to get started - OpenStreetMap on your smartphone: editing and using the map - Why OpenStreetMap and the public sector would make a great partnership - How organisations can contribute to OpenStreetMap
I'd say the first 1-3 items might be nice for educating anyone in Switzerland who is interested to get involved for their first time.
I will update at a future Stammtisch if I make any progress on this as a concept.
best,
Chris
