Salut 'zamme,
I have set up a Swiss version of the Taginfo service at
http://taginfo.openstreetmap.ch
This is a localized version of the global Taginfo service that only considers tagging within Switzerland. At the moment, the service is updated twice weekly. More frequent updates are possible on request.
For those of you who have not heard of Taginfo before: this is a service that provides an overview of the actual tag usage in OSM. It allows to search for tags and gives statistics over usage. More info here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Taginfo
Hope it helps.
Sarah
Hi Sarah
Superb!
What does twice weekly mean: Which days?

Monday and Thursday at around 10 a.m. You can find the date of the last update in the upper right corner.

Thanks for the effort. To make use of it, I am looking for a way to locate a collection of misspelled tags in order to correct them. Do you know a way to do that?
Maybe it's easy if you know how to use josm, but I don't know it enough, though. I don't have the opportunity to download GB of data to find my errors. And Programming skills are not that big.
Does anyone know the trick I need?
Thanks, again. Thomas

I assume you know JOSM a bit? Then the easiest way to do that is to use the remote control function:
- Activate it in Edit->Preferences->Remote Control->Enable Remote Control (the icon with the remote control)
- restart JOSM
- now in Taginfo go to the page describing the key with the typo, for example: http://taginfo.openstreetmap.ch/tags/information=guide_post#wiki
- Click on the JOSM link below the title. JOSM should download all objects with the typo.
In practise, there are two obstacles:
1. Taginfo still uses the old XAPI which is very slow and unreliable. When I just tried it didn't work at all. 2. Even the Swiss version of taginfo will download tags from the entire planet.
I will look into both issues.

Using JXAPI now. That should work reliably. Restricting the request to a box around Switzerland makes the request actually very, very slow, so I will keep it as it is. You will get the objects from the entire planet.
We really need a Swiss XAPI.

Thanks for bringing this Taginfo Switzerland service to us!

To me XAPI has such a limited query syntax (assuming you mostly use something like this http://jxapi.openstreetmap.org/xapi/api/0.6/*%5Bkey=value]). What is the use case for the XAPI button? What are you doing with the raw OSM XML reponse? Would it be also acceptable if there would be a webservice which would respond with a webmap of switzerland (instead of an OSM XML file)?

In case of Taginfo if is really meant for correcting errors. You can load the raw XML into JOSM although the remote control ist much more confortable. You can also just have a look at it to further look at the tag combinations used.

That can actually easily be done with some OpenLayers magick because OpenLayers allows to directly display the XML files. Interesting idea but nothing I would want to bother the global XAPI with.
Apart from this, I think there are a ton of uses for a Swiss XAPI even if it has limited capabilities. Benni could get the data for his public transport map easier, for example. And maybe there are other people who would want to experiment with very special data without having to process the entire Swiss extract. Even the pbf has now 80MB, nothing you want to download and process every day.
And, of course, it would be just fun to try. ;) The challenge is to maintain an up-to-date Swiss extract in the osmosis Postgresql DB.

Actually I've already setup a Postgres/PostGIS DB on my server to get the data because the geocoding API from cloudmade has very limited capabilities, it's actually abstracting the tags which is not really what I want. I used o5mfilter[2] to get just the public transport related stuff out of a planet dump in 3 hours, which is really cool. I'm now working on something like a public transport API, which would make it possible to get data consolidated by the rules of the new public transport feature, but with respect to the situation, that there are thousands of stations with the "old" scheme. See some simple stats on this [1]. The API is not yet open for public use since I'm still experimenting with the DB scheme best suited. I've tried the scheme used by osm2pgsql, since it would then be easy to also render the data with mapnik, but it is not really suited for complex querys like all nodes/ways in the same stop_area as the given one. maybe i have to get some data redundant in the DB, just to speed things up and still be able to feed mapnik from it. But that would make the upgrade process more complicated, any ideas? Anyway I'm already using this data on [3], so it basically works, and is so many times faster and more flexible than using the cloudmade service.
I'm going to try setting up a XAPI Switzerland using the new JXAPI code, doesn't seem to be too hard (at least I hope so).
And, of course, it would be just fun to try. ;)
thats the reason we are doing all this anyway, isn't it?
The challenge is to maintain an up-to-date Swiss extract in the osmosis Postgresql DB.
Do you think that would be a problem, is the available software (osmosis) not capable of doing this in a more or less automatic way without to much fiddling? Any hints? It would be a challenge to get it minutely updated just for switzerland, since then the provided osc files need to get filtered somehow. But by using the daily language extract from geofabrik, and then creating a osc against the version from last day and write that to the DB with osmosis, i think it should work. I don't mind to download the 80MB once a day.
Cheers Beni

Sorry to jump on this, but I hope 'consolidation' doesn't mean to mass retag things. I think this 'new' schema allows the 'old' tags to co-exist, so just leave them be.
Personally, I prefer the 'old' schema because the 'new' proposal is about as simple and readable as a IEEE standard (or, if you prefer these things: the German tax laws). I mean: two nodes and one relation for a simple one way bus stop? Why? In 95% of cases the 'old' schema will do the job just fine and your map proves that.

Maybe you should have a look how I do the hiking map [1]. The philosophy is basically to derive specialised database schemata instead of using the one-size-fits-all version. This way you get tables that are suitable for both rendering and fast online queries.
I solved that by deriving table from a osmosis planet database. (There is the beginning of a framework [2] but really just the beginning.) The advantage is that it has full updating support.
Another library which has the same philosophy is imposm[3]. It imports specialised schemata directly from a osm-file. It might be a bit more mature, but there is no update-support.
I'm going to try setting up a XAPI Switzerland using the new JXAPI code, doesn't seem to be too hard (at least I hope so).
Cool.

I would create an osmosis psql DB from the Swiss extract and then use the planetary minute update to keep it up-to-date. After each update the DB needs to be cropped to Swiss size. This step actually needs some thinking but it should be possible. (If you want to do it really well, you should write a special osmosis task that takes a polygon as input and crops the data already while updating the DB.)
Gruss
Sarah

Maybe easy to feed OpenLayer format.OSM directly from a cached osm file of the output. For small request at least.
