As there are several cities/towns/villages with the same name in Switzerland canton codes are used to distinguish them. The codes are not used consistently.

* Sometimes they are used, sometimes not (mixed within town). * Used with and without parentheses (BE) / BE, (AG) / AG

IMHO id would make sense to have some guidelines how to use them.

The Village names are used in several tags, maybe we should apply different rules to them?

* addr:city * name (of place, public_transport station and others) * uic_name * ...?

What do we consider as the "official" Name of a town?
