Kindergarten starts with 4 here (Canton Aargau, but it should slowly be harmonized throughout the country). Now naturally the parents accompany the kids for the first couple of weeks and they form informal groups with other kids of the same age and older after that, so they are not walking totally alone (in our case 1.5km one way), but in general the feeling is that navigating your way to school is an important part of growing up. My older kid is now 7 and has walked the way with the exception of the first couple of weeks without larger issues for the last 3 and a bit years.
Naturally if you have more traffic than we do you might need to have wardens at pedestrian crossings and so on.
That is the good news, the bad news is that since they can't stay over lunch we currently have no choice than doing a school run over midday when they have school/kindergarten in the afternoon lunch break is simply too short.

Hi Simon,
PS: off topic: here (just outside of Zürich) our kids are supposed to walk on their own (without adult supervision) starting with Kindergarten.
I'd like too that kids should be more independant, but I feel being the only one to think like people from Zurich.
Just te be sure, how old is kid that goes to Kindergarten ???
Thanks
