Wikimedia Hackathon Zurich 2014

The next Wikimedia annual development community meet-up — the Wikimedia Hackathon — will be held in Zürich, Switzerland in 2014 from May 9-11. It is planned to be a long weekend filled with hacking anything related to MediaWiki or one of the Wikimedia projects (and sometimes other things, too). The Hackathon is completely open; we welcome both seasoned and new developers, as well as people working on MediaWiki, tools, pywikibot, gadgets, extensions, templates, etc. Previous hackathon events were held all over the world, such as in Amsterdam, Netherlands (2013), Pune, India (2012), San Francisco, USA (2012), Mumbai, India (2011), Brighton, UK (2011), New Orleans, USA (2011), Berlin, Germany (2011) and Washington DC, USA (2010). As you can see in the email that Rupert forward, the Hackathon is not all about coding Mediawiki, other project that can impact Mediawiki or Wikipedia and its sister project are welcomed! Swiss, and european in general, OSM developers are warmly invited to apply for a scholarship to attend the Wikimedia Hackathon, just keep in mind that this year the motivation is to go back to the basis and have three days of hacking. I agree, this is not simple at all - this is why we have no map namespace, but there is definitely a need. I'm hoping Zurich can provide a platform where we can get somewhere close in that direction and generate some momentum. The fact we have a BetaFeatures now on the desktop site means we are free to explore ideas, for those ideas to fail and to buy us time to perfect them. I personally am interested purely from a readers perspective - it makes me sad everytime I see a static map made out of CSS and SVGs that looks like something I could play with and explore. I want maps to be a big part of the Wikipedia experience. I really think a good first step would be to lay the foundations - keep things as simple as possible - a simple way of storing the data and a simple way of viewing the data stored - whether that involves Wikidata or not I'm not sure but let's see what comes out of Zurich. For those not in Zurich, I hope some of you can participate on the IRC channel #wikimedia-dev ? Mobility-Standorte???

Hallo zusammen, Bei mir im Quartier wurde vor einigen Monaten ein neuer Mobility-Standort eingerichtet. Nun habe ich festgestellt, dass der immer noch nicht in OSM drin ist. Ich habe ihn nicht eingezeichnet, weil ich der Meinung war, das Mobility ihre Standorte selber pflegt. Weiss jemand etwas davon? Grundsätzlich wäre es doch sehr begrüssenswert, wenn die jeweiligen Provider (Mobility für Mobility-Standorte, Post für Briefeinwürfe, Swisscom für Telefonzellen, Wasserversorger (z.B. ewb in Bern) für Hydranten ...) die über die Original-Daten verfügen, diese auch auf OSM spielen würden, das gäbe doch die aktuellsten Daten, am wenigsten Fehler und am wenigsten Aufwand für alle? => Soll ich mal mobility kontaktieren, und sie motivieren, doch bitte ihre Standorte wieder in OSM zu pflegen? Overlapping highways from a new mapper

Hello, We do have a new mapper who is very enthusiastic about adding missing names to highways. Unfortunately he or she does this by drawing new highways on top the the existing ones, which leads to lots of overlapping and badly connected highways like here around Grandvaux: http://keepright.at/report_map.php?zoom=15&lat=46.50282&lon=6.72371&layers=… Saturday I contacted Correia_TL about the problem and I've started to clean up things around Lausanne. So far I have no answer, but he started editing again. In the last days Correia_TL created plenty of overlapping highways in Moudon (so far visible only in the JOSM validator). I appreciate Correia_TL's enthusiasm and believe that he is acting with the best intentions. But what can we do to make sure that he is learning to use the ID editor properly and what would be the most efficient way to clean up all the errors that he has created so far? Thorsten (Shernott)

Public transport: didok update

Hello fellow mappers I did an update to the public transport map comparing OSM data with data from DIDOK, the official list of public transport stops in Switzerland from BAV. Tha data used now is form the last time table change. With this update the map now resides on the SOSM server, and not on my personal one any more. The new address is http://didok.osm.ch It is quite a while since the initial import of DIDOK into OSM. Lots of things have changed, so please have a look at the map and see if something in your vicinity is outdated: Look for stops which are in OSM but not in DIDOK (layer "stops only in didok") Look for stops which are in DIDOK but not in OSM (layer "stops only in osm") Also, there are still 7200 unchecked stops which were imported from DIDOK which are potentially wrong.
